What are dental implants?

Dental implants are used to replace a tooth root with an artificial tooth root. This artificial root is surgically placed into the jawbone, with an artificial tooth then being attached to the implant. This metal screw is typically made out of titanium. At Be Dental, we offer both immediate implant solutions, and staged implant placements.

Dental implant options

When it comes to Gold Coast dental implants, Be Dental offers a number of different options. We’ll discuss these options with you further when you make your appointment.

Single/multi tooth implants

These are a common type of dental implant, and involve an artificial root placed into the jaw with a permanent artificial tooth placed on top of the screw.

Overdenture

Overdentures are removable dental implants, typically recommended for patients missing teeth in an arch. As a dental solution, they provide more stability than dentures.

All on implants

This dental implant method replaced all teeth in an arch with a set of new teeth that are supported by four titanium implants in the jaw.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

For those that are good candidates for the procedure, there are several benefits to having dental implants.

Prevent jawbone loss

Missing teeth can cause the surrounding jawbone to deteriorate. Having an implant placed stimulates the bone like real tooth roots, contributing to maintained bone density and prevening face sagging.

Durable and long-lasting

With the right care, dental implants can last decades, making them an incredibly durable tooth-replacement option. As they’re made with biocompatible materials like titanium, they integrate seamlessly with your jawbone.

Look and feel like natural teeth

Dental implants are designed to mimic the appearance, strength, and function of natural teeth. Most people won’t be able to tell the difference, and you’ll be able to bite, chew, and speak normally without worrying about them slipping.

Protect adjacent teeth

Unlike bridges, implants don’t require the shaping or grinding of neighbouring teeth. This helps preserve your natural tooth structure and reduces the risk of future dental issues. They also help your jawbone’s stability, which benefits your other teeth, too.

Improved comfort and confidence

Dental implants remove the slipping or irritation that can be associated with removable dentures. As they are securely attached to the jaw, they make eating, speaking, and smiling feel natural.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Dental implants aren’t for everyone. Factors such as bone density, gum disease, and certain medical conditions may affect your eligibility. Our experienced dental professionals will sit down with you and discuss whether or not dental implants seem suitable to your situation. While it differs from person to person, some traits that could contribute to being a good candidate for dental implants include:

What steps are involved with dental implants?

Getting a dental implant is a relatively straightforward process, and we’ll be there for every step of the way.

One

Initial consultation

Before we proceed with your dental implant, we’ll first need to assess whether you’re a good candidate for the treatment. This assessment may involve a mouth examination, X-rays, and a review of your medical history. We’ll also explain the steps of your Gold Coast dental implant procedure, including costs and timelines.

Two

Preparation

Preparation for your dental implants may include removing a damaged tooth, bone grafting or sinus lift if there isn’t enough jawbone. We offer bone grafting and internal sinus lifts in house at Be Dental. We’lll also discuss anaesthesia or minor oral sedation options with you, and schedule the implant surgery date.

Three

Implant placement

On the day of surgery you’ll be numb while our dental team places the titanium implant into your jawbone using guided surgery. Once the site is closed, a temporary restoration may be placed to protect the implant.

Four

Healing

In the following weeks to months, the dental implant will undergo a process called osseointegration. This is where the bone bonds to the implant, providing long-term stability. You may experience some swelling and mild discomfort early on. Our Gold Coast dentists will schedule you in for follow-up visits to monitor healing and remove stitches if needed.

Five

Crown placement

Once the implant is fully integrated, our dentists will attach an abutment (the connector that will secure the crown to the dental implant post) and take a digital scan for a custom crown that matches your bite and colour. The permanent crown is then fitted and adjusted, completing the restoration.

Six

Aftercare

Dental implants should be treated like natural teeth. Keep the implant area clean with good brushing and flossing, and attend regular dental check-ups. Contact us if you notice unusual pain, loosening, or signs of infection at the dental implant site.
